Why would the sky stumble on like a broad target? Airglow. Following a broad thunderstorm over Bangladesh in slack April, broad circular ripples of exquisite air appeared over Tibet, China, as pictured right here. The uncommon sample is created by atmospheric gravity waves, waves of alternating air force that can develop with high as the air thins, in this case about 90-kilometers up. Unlike auroras powered by collisions with provocative charged particles and viewed at high latitudes, airglow is thanks to chemiluminescence, the manufacturing of sunshine in a chemical reaction. Extra usually viewed near the horizon, airglow keeps the evening sky from ever being fully murky.
