A newly came across automobile-sized asteroid spirited made the closest-identified flyby to Earth with out hitting our planet.
On Sunday (Aug. 16), the asteroid, at the starting up labeled ZTF0DxQ and now formally identified to astronomers as 2020 QG, swooped by Earth at a mere 1,830 miles (2,950 kilometers) away. That provides 2020 QG the title of closest asteroid flyby ever recorded that did no longer terminate with the build rock’s dying.
It be the closest identified, non-impacting asteroid, NASA officials told Roar.com

“The outdated day’s shut procedure is [the] closest on document,” Chodas told Industry Insider. “For people that lower value a pair of identified asteroids that have in actuality impacted our planet.”
The shut flyby became also a rapid one, as 2020 QG swooped shut to Earth at a blistering 27,600 mph (44,400 kph). The item is referring to the dimensions of a compact automobile, likely about 10 to 20 toes (3 to 6 meters) in diameter.
In accordance to the Global Tall Union’s Minor Planet Center, 2020 QG flew over the Pacific Ocean, some distance east of Australia, within the route of its shut procedure.
