(CNN)A new species of crab that scientists instruct is the “strangest crab that has ever lived” has been discovered in Colombia and the United States.

The prehistoric crab dates encourage to 95 million years ago and scientists instruct it defies the complete same outdated crab parts. The brand new species, named Callichimaera perplexa, has zigzag claws, massive eyes with no sockets, an exposed tail and leg-admire mouthparts.
“We began taking a watch at these fossils and we discovered they’d what looked admire the eyes of a larva, the mouth of a shrimp, claws of a frog crab, and the carapace of a lobster,” stated Javier Luque, postdoctoral paleontologist on the University of Alberta and Yale University, in a commentary from the University of Alberta. “We absorb a belief of what a conventional crab looks admire — and these new fossils ruin all these principles.”
As a consequence of the mismatch of body parts it was entirely fitting that the new species was named after a chimera: a mythological creature that has a lion’s head, goat’s body and a snake’s tail. The fats name of the new crab, Callichimaera perplexa, interprets to “perplexing honest chimera.” With the ordinary legs, Luque stated he believes the creature lived within the water, swimming bigger than crawling around on land.
“Callichimaera perplexa is so outlandish and ordinary that it would perchance perchance perchance be considered the platypus of the crab world,” stated Luque in a commentary from Yale. “Normally we deem of crabs as massive animals with massive carapaces, noteworthy claws, little eyes in lengthy eyestalks, and a little tail tucked under the body. Neatly, Callichimaera defies all of these ‘crabby’ parts and forces a rethink of our definition of what makes a crab a crab.”
Luque led a world team of researchers that first discovered the fossilized crabs, no bigger than a quarter, in 2005 within the Andes Mountain of Colombia. Over the subsequent few years, researchers discovered bigger than 70 specimens of the prehistoric crab, including infants and adults. Some had been discovered in Wyoming.
A take a look at on the team’s findings was published on Wednesday within the journal Science Advances.
“This discovery, from the mid-Cretaceous, illustrates that there are aloof graceful discoveries of additional most modern, ordinary organisms ready to be discovered, in particular within the tropics. It makes you wonder ‘what else is available for us to look at?'”
